Jake Ferderer is a patent attorney in the firm’s mechanical engineering practice group, focusing his practice on assisting companies in all stages of development in building intellectual property portfolios with strong assets to give clients a competitive advantage and achieve their strategic goals. He has advised companies in a variety of technology sectors, including aerospace, automotive, medical device, heavy machinery, semiconductor, agricultural, alternative energy, and consumer products.

With a broad industry background prior to practicing law, Jake possesses a sophisticated perspective on in-house business operations and strives to align with clients’ business objectives to provide tailored intellectual property counsel. Jake has a wide range of experience preparing and prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications; providing opinions related to freedom to operate, patentability, and validity analyses; and conducting due diligence for the acquisition, sale, or licensing of patent assets. Jake also has a strong design patent practice, leveraging protection of ornamental product designs to further enhance organizations’ IP portfolios.

Jake is a former mechanical engineer and product liability consultant who worked for more than ten years with PACCAR Inc, a Fortune 500 company that manufactures medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. As an engineer, he specialized in thermodynamic, aerodynamic, and structural design and analysis, and served on product safety and regulatory committees. Often appearing as the corporate representative in product liability litigation, Jake supported counsel in the defense of PACCAR by offering technical testimony in depositions and trials, developing case strategy, and providing failure investigation and root cause analysis. He served as chair of PACCAR’s Kenworth Division patent committee for six years. Jake is an inventor holding nine U.S. patents. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in 2021 - 2024.
