On, July 30, 2015, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced the appointment of Drew Hirshfeld as the new Commissioner for Patents. Hirshfeld, currently the Deputy Commissioner for Patent Examination Policy, succeeds Margaret Focarino, who served at the USPTO for 38 years and retired earlier this month. As commissioner, Hirshfeld is responsible for the management and direction of all patent-related aspects that affect the administration of patent operations, examination policy, resources and planning, and budget administration.
