The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced the winners of the National Patent Application Drafting Competition (NPADC), which challenges law school student teams on the fundamentals of patent prosecution. This year, a record-breaking 75 teams comprised of 250 students competed over the last six months, working on hypothetical invention statements, searching prior art, preparing specifications, and drafting claims, while at the same time participating in the USPTO’s patent prosecution boot camp and other training sessions. Regional rounds in March whittled the competition down to five regional finalists – the Eastern, Midwest, Rocky Mountain, Silicon Valley, and Texas regions. The team from George Washington University Law School (Eastern region) was named the winner. To read more about the competition and the other finalists, please visit the USPTO site.
