The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced the winners of the fourth annual Patents for Humanity program on September 29, 2016. Patents for Humanity is a competition recognizing patent owners and licensees who address global challenges in health and standards of living. The entrants compete in the categories of medicine, nutrition, sanitation, energy, and living standards, and award recipients receive public recognition at a ceremony sponsored by the USPTO.

Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Michelle K. Lee noted that good patented and marketed ideas are having a positive impact around the world and these ideas are, "transcending national borders and transforming lives," also stating, “By showcasing the meritorious work of patent owners to address 21st century humanitarian challenges, we hope this program will continue to inspire and guide countless more innovators.”
