United States Remains Leader in International Patent and Trademark Filings
In an annual report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United States maintained its position as the top source of international patent and trademark application filings in 2015, followed by Japan and China. Setting a new annual record, international patent applications filed under WIPO's Patent Cooperation Treaty grew by 1.7 percent to 218,000 last year. For nearly four decades, the largest number of international patent applications filed each year have been filed by innovators based in the United States. Under the Madrid System, international trademark application filings grew by 2.9 percent reaching a record 49, 273 applications. International industrial design applications filed under WIPO’s Hague System grew by 40 percent in 2015, the fastest rate since 2008. For full press release
