On May 11, 2016, the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA) was signed into law by President Barack Obama. The new law, which has received overwhelming support from both the Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, will amend the Economic Espionage Act of 1996 and provide federal civil recourse for companies and individuals that have been victimized by trade secret misappropriation. The DTSA, which will co-exist with state-level trade secrets law, aims to further harmonize the law through a single federal statute, allowing for more predictable, nationwide case law to be developed.
