In an effort to combat the use of improper specimens on trademark applications, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has established a pilot program to allow third parties to submit protests via email. Users can now transmit information to a dedicated inbox at the USPTO about applications that include specimens that are not in actual use, but rather have been created for the purpose of the submission. The USPTO notes that the pilot program is based on "operational need" and could be terminated at any time for lack of use.

Additional information can be found in the USPTO's announcement, TM Specimen Protests Email Pilot Program.
